The 21st century has brought instant messaging, blogs and MySpace, and for one aspiring musician it was those resources that helped formed his band.

In the summer of 2006, Kylan Savage started a MySpace profile, set out to make a band, and he did.

"With the MySpace bulletins and Facebook, I found a couple of guys who wanted to play in a band," he said. "Even though it didn't work out and they quit, and so the band went through some changes, I was still lucky enough to know friends who knew how to play and wanted to play."

The three who make the bill are Grant Stallcup on bass guitar, Brad Stallcup on drums, while Savage is lead vocals along with acoustic and electric guitar. They create the sound of a full pop-punk band for The Truth About Moviestars.

"The chemistry I found with Grant and Brad just worked," he said. "The band returned to its original acoustic sound, and it's great."

The story behind the band name comes from Savage being a fan of early movies, especially Gene Kelly's "Singing In The Rain."

"Gene Kelly says, Well, we movie stars get the glory; I guess we have to take the little heartaches that go with it. People think we live lives of glamour and romance, but we're really lonely, terribly lonely.' That is the idea behind The Truth About Moviestars, even if we idolize people and put them on a pedestal as the epitome of this or that, they're still just people," said Savage.

The music they make is in reference to that old-timey feel, Savage said.

"I am inspired by actors like Audrey Hepburn, and with our newest album, Black and White Affair,' it is a take on that feeling you get from old movies," he said. "I guess you could say I romanticize everything."

All three members are passionate about their music, and nothing is done half-heartedly.

When performing live, the three at times can choose a genre and run with it.

"We have a wide audience," he said. "We play what we feel people will enjoy."
For the younger set, The Truth About Movie Stars will bring its blend of "indie pop rock" to the Pinnacle Hills Promenade. They will be playing between Starbucks and Fish City Grill Saturday evening. Members are vocalist and guitarist Kylan Savage; guitarist Josh Mitchael, drummer Brad Stallcup and bassist Justin Slavens. All are students at area high schools. The band has been together for about a year and is developing quite a following, even playing a few regional festivals. This is a good chance to check them out for free.
One of the last bands to perform Friday night is more experienced. The Truth About Movie Stars has performed several times in the area and even on a national stage. They performed in last year's battle.

"This year the bands are better," member Kylan Savage said. "The bands may be new, but the (musicians ) are better."
